Love Knots

Chapter 7

Ambrose sighed softly, feeling nice and warm as he slowly began to rise from sleep, but then wrinkled his brow when he heard it… the sound of movement in the room. Usually if the maids didn’t see him in his lab, they didn’t disturb him to clean, coming back later in the day, going on about their duties before returning to his room.

Opening his eyes slowly, he sat up, blinking as he looked around in confusion before his gaze landed on someone sitting on the side of the bed, putting their shoes on. Ambrose grunted slightly and made a face as he reached up to rub the sleep from his eyes.

Hearing the grunt, Wyatt turned, standing up and smiled at him. “Well, good morning,” he said. “‘Bout time you woke up, sleepyhead.”

“W-where am I?” Ambrose asked, still slightly confused.

“You’re in my room…” Wyatt replied and leaned down, dropping a kiss on Ambrose’s forehead.

Ambrose groaned softly, still waking up. “Your room?” he asked and yawned stretching. “Mmm… Wyatt?”

“Yeah,” Wyatt replied.

Ambrose blinked and shook his head to clear it.

“Are you okay?” Wyatt asked, sitting down on the bed next to him, looking at him in concern, noticing how confused he seemed.

“Y-yeah…”Ambrose said and trailed off before looking around the room again. “I… I think so… This… this is your room?” he asked, looking up to meet Wyatt’s gaze.

“Yeah,” Wyatt said with a nod.

Ambrose swallowed and lowered his gaze, his hands smoothing over the blankets. “Then… that would make this your bed,” he murmured softly.

“Yes,” Wyatt said gently but deliberately, watching Ambrose closely.

“I… I’m in your bed,” Ambrose said and swallowed again.

“Yes,” Wyatt said with the same deliberate gentle tone. “You’re in my bed.”

“I… I’m in your bed…. I’m in your bed…” Ambrose murmured his breathing increasing as he became agitated.

“Ambrose,” Wyatt murmured.

“I… I’m in your bed,” he gasped and looked up, tears welling in his eyes.

“Ambrose,” Wyatt said a little more sternly, hoping to snap him out of it.

“W-why?” Ambrose asked looking at him, his face flushed as tears began to spill down his cheeks and he squirmed, trying to get out of the bed, only succeeding in getting further tangled in the sheets. “Why am I in your bed? W-we d-didn’t… Did we?”

Realizing the state of panic Ambrose was in, Wyatt reached out; wrapping his hands firmly around Ambrose’s biceps and gave him a gentle shake to get his attention. “Ambrose!” he said. “Look at me!”

Ambrose blinked and focused on him though he was still agitated and squirming slightly.

“Calm down, please…” Wyatt said with gentle firmness. “Nothing happened, I swear. I wouldn’t hurt you like that…” He paused when Ambrose blinked at him but stopped squirming before he released him, sighing as he ran a hand through his hair. “You started to fall asleep last night and I asked if you wanted me to take you to your rooms… you said no. I was going to let you sleep in here and take the couch, but you asked me to stay. I swear to you, Ambrose,” he said looking at him seriously. “All I did was keep you warm… you said you were cold when you asked me to stay, and you were shivering.”

Ambrose swallowed and lowered his gaze, chewing on his lip. “I… I don’t remember,” he said softly.

Wyatt sighed and nodded. “Yeah,” he murmured, as Ambrose looked up to meet his gaze. “You were pretty tired… the wine probably didn’t help any…”

Ambrose exhaled heavily, his shoulders sagging. “I’m sorry, Wyatt,” he murmured, lowering his eyes and feeling foolish.

“It’s okay. It’s not your fault, Ambrose,” Wyatt replied softly and reached out, squeezing his hand gently. “How’d you sleep?”

Ambrose smiled slightly, a faint blush tinting his cheeks. “Like the dead,” he murmured, glancing at Wyatt fleetingly.

“Well, welcome back to the land of the living,” Wyatt said, pulling back and getting to his feet. “Come on,” he murmured, inclining his head toward the door.

Ambrose blinked. “Where are you going?” he asked.

“It’s Friday, Sweetheart,” he replied. “Still a work day… come on… we’ll be late.”

Ambrose blinked at him again, his eyes widening slightly before he nearly flew from the bed.

Wyatt just shook his head with a smile and followed him out the door where he was slipping his shoes on.

“I um,” Ambrose said, not looking up at him as he finished with his shoes and moved brusquely to the door, opening it. “I hope…”

“Ambrose,” Wyatt interrupted, putting his hand on the door, closing it once more.

“Yes, what is it?” Ambrose asked, looking up at him warily.

“I…” Wyatt began and exhaled heavily. “Look, after last night, I owe you one…”

“One…?” Ambrose asked in singsong, slightly confused.

“You told me what you remembered about who you were…” Wyatt answered. “And you said I’m more of a mystery to you than you are to me… I… I’d like to take some of that away.”

“Okay…” Ambrose murmured, still not quite following where Wyatt was going.

“Come back again…” Wyatt murmured. “Tonight… Please. I’m asking…”

Ambrose blinked and a slow smile graced his lips. “O-okay,” he murmured.

Wyatt exhaled a breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding. “Good,” he murmured and leaned forward, giving Ambrose a kiss on the forehead. “Then I’ll see you tonight if I don’t see you sooner.”

Ambrose smiled and nodded as his blush deepened and Wyatt released the door, opening it before they parted company in the hallway; Ambrose heading off to his rooms for a shower and quick change before going to his duties for the day, and Wyatt heading off to his office.
